NEGATIVE SPACE
A SERIES OF PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTWORKS

I've always been interested in photographing empty spaces.

In the absence of people certain spaces lose some of their purpose, and in turn there is a shift in how they make us feel.

During the pandemic, this area of my work has developed new meaning – when certain spaces were forced to remain empty. The name negative space is a nod to this. The palpable tension between struggling businesses and industries, and government restrictions.

I also find the term 'negative space' interesting when we consider what it means in other disciplines. In cinema it can be used to create tension in a scene, as the viewer looks to the empty part of the screen expecting it to reveal something. Whilst in design it is used to give breathing space in the work, and perhaps create more impact in other areas.
