COMMERCIAL LIFESTYLE + PLACE MARKETING PHOTOGRAPHY
FOR 3 HARDMAN STREET, SPINNINGFIELDS
A COMMERCIAL LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT FOR CREATIVE AGENCY J2 CAPTURING THE ENERGY, AMENITIES AND PROFESSIONAL LIFESTYLE AT 3 HARDMAN STREET IN SPINNINGFIELDS, MANCHESTER.
PROJECTS LIKE THIS HIGHLIGHT THE POWER OF COMMERCIAL LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHY IN PLACE MARKETING. BY COMBINING ARCHITECTURAL IMAGERY WITH AUTHENTIC HUMAN MOMENTS, IT BECOMES POSSIBLE TO TELL A MUCH RICHER STORY ABOUT A BUILDING AND THE LIFESTYLE IT CAN OFFER.
THE BRIEF
I've photographed quite a few commercial lifestyle and interiors projects around Spinningfields in Manchester, including a previous commission from creative agency J2 for their 3 Hardman Street property. I’d previously produced placemaking imagery for the building, helping showcase its position within Manchester’s thriving business district. This time, the brief was a little different.
As work on the building has developed so to has the focus - from simply presenting the location to demonstrating what working in the building actually feels like. The shoot was commissioned to support both film production and marketing collateral for the building’s website and promotional materials.
Working alongside the video team at BAR Productions, my role as a commercial photographer in Manchester was to capture a fresh suite of still imagery that reflected the building’s evolving workspace offering. The client wanted images that would highlight both the established character of the property and the newly developed spaces and amenities.
Coverage needed to span the entire experience of the building. That meant photographing the external architecture, reception arrival spaces, meeting rooms, office floors, breakout areas and terraces. But it didn’t stop there. Modern workspaces aren’t just desks and meeting rooms anymore. Facilities such as the on-site PureGym Spinningfields, cycle storage, end-of-trip facilities, showers, changing rooms, EV charging points and even the loading bay all formed part of the story.
Professional models from FAD Models were hired to bring the building to life. Their role was to represent the kind of young professionals the space is designed to attract. The objective was clear: produce a vibrant, premium visual library that would support brand storytelling through lifestyle photography and position the building as an exciting place to work in the heart of Manchester.
THE PROCESS
This shoot was a little different from previous projects with J2. Earlier assignments had largely been self-managed, but this time the scale of the production was bigger. With the client on site, professional models, and a full video crew working simultaneously, the day required careful planning and collaboration.
From the outset we established a simple but effective “tag-team” approach with the videographers at BAR Productions. With limited time and shared access to models and locations, communication was key. By coordinating movements through the building and supporting each other’s setups, we made the most of the day without stepping on each other’s toes.
As a Manchester freelance photographer who regularly works on commercial lifestyle photography for UK agencies, I’m used to balancing structure with spontaneity. Some shots required clear direction. For example, staged moments in meeting rooms, arrival scenes in reception, or colleagues collaborating in breakout areas. Other moments worked best when the models were simply given a scenario and encouraged to improvise naturally.
Authenticity was always the goal. Nobody wants lifestyle photography that looks forced or overly staged. Instead, I focused on capturing believable interactions including colleagues arriving at reception, grabbing coffee, heading to a meeting, or finishing a workout at the gym before starting the day.
Lighting and timing also played a big role. Weather and daylight inevitably influence architectural and interior photography, so we worked around the best natural light wherever possible. Reception areas were scheduled around quieter periods to avoid heavy footfall, while office floors and amenities were photographed when access was easiest.
The visual style required clean, premium compositions with a slight urban edge, something that reflects the building’s target demographic of ambitious young professionals drawn to city-centre workspaces.
While most of the photography took place inside the building, we also stepped outside to capture the surrounding energy of Spinningfields. With bars, restaurants, retail and leisure facilities right on the doorstep, it was important to show that working here is about more than just the office. It’s about the wider lifestyle the location offers.
THE RESPONSE
The final photography delivered a cohesive visual asset library that reflects the current evolution of the building and its offering.
From architectural overviews to close-up lifestyle moments, the imagery showcases the many layers of the workplace experience. Prospective occupiers can see the arrival journey through reception, the flexibility of meeting spaces, the collaborative energy of breakout areas and the convenience of amenities like gym access, cycle storage and EV charging.
For J2, the images support the broader marketing strategy for the building and work seamlessly alongside the accompanying film content. Together, the stills and video help position 3 Hardman Street as a modern, dynamic workspace in Manchester’s thriving business district.
From my perspective as a commercial property photographer and freelance lifestyle photographer for businesses in the UK, this project was a brilliant example of how photography can elevate property marketing. Great architecture deserves great storytelling, and that’s exactly what commercial lifestyle photography helps deliver.
Projects like this highlight the power of commercial lifestyle photography in place marketing. By combining architectural imagery with authentic human moments, it becomes possible to tell a much richer story about a building and the lifestyle it enables. Working with J2, BAR Productions and the talented models made the process seamless, and the final imagery hopefully now helps position 3 Hardman Street as one of Manchester’s most attractive and forward-thinking office spaces.
