COMMERCIAL INTERIOR PHOTOGRAPHY
FOR NEAL'S YARD'S NEW MANCHESTER STORE
COMMERCIAL INTERIORS PHOTOGRAPHY BALANCING SPATIAL DESIGN + BRAND IDENTITY FOR THE NEW NEAL'S YARD CONCEPT STORE IN MANCHESTER'S ARNDALE CENTRE
THE BRIEF
Neal’s Yard commissioned me to document their newly relocated Manchester store ahead of its public opening.
Moving from their former location on King Street to a prominent, 873-square-foot unit in Manchester's Arndale, the relocation was highly strategic. The new space was designed as the North West debut of the brand's experiential "Store of the Future" concept.
My instructions were to capture a comprehensive suite of clean, professional marketing and PR assets before the launch-day crowds arrived. The photography needed to showcase the complete design story: from the wide structural layout of the boutique to the specific physical details that define the brand's modern retail philosophy.
This included documenting how the new store integrates with the rest of the Arndale, as well as capturing the approach perspective of a customer. I also wanted to try and emulate some of the texture and nuance of the space with the intention of conveying the sensory experience of being in store. As you would expect, the smells of the essential oils in their products carry you through the space, as your eyes are drawn to the subtle branding and product colours, so I wanted the photography to feel natural and organic to reflect this.
THE PROCESS
Documenting a commercial retail space inside one of the UK’s busiest shopping schemes demands careful timing. Working in the quiet windows after the final shop-fitting teams signed off and before the doors opened to the public, I structured the shoot around the physical flow of the retail design.
I began by capturing the storefront, framing the wide glass entrance to show how the warm interior lighting pops when approaching from inside the Arndale Centre. Moving inside, the primary technical challenge was managing the mix of daylight spilling in from the Arndale's glass atrium with the store's interior spotlights. To preserve the natural textures without creating harsh, artificial highlights, I tried to balance the ambient exposures as with my previous commercial interior photography projects.
This allowed me to accurately render the flagship design elements, such as the oak tree centrepiece that represents the brand's logo, and the bespoke blue ceramic tiles. I kept the vertical lines of the custom timber shelving perfectly straight, making sure the final images represented the architectural layout exactly as the design team intended.
The resulting image library provided Neal’s Yard and their PR partners with a versatile set of professional assets ready for immediate media distribution. Capturing these clean, empty interiors is virtually impossible once a store begins trading, making this pre-launch window incredibly valuable.
The photos were immediately used in national design and beauty press, securing coverage in publications like Retail Focus, TheIndustry.beauty, and Secret Manchester to mark the store's grand opening. Beyond editorial PR, the images serve as a record of the brand's North West concept rollout, providing property stakeholders M&G Real Estate and Global Mutual, as well as the interior design team, with high-end portfolio assets that document the successful execution of this modern retail space.
