A COLLECTION OF COMMERCIAL INTERIORS PHOTOGRAPHY +
COMMERCIAL PROPERTY PHOTOGRAPHY
SHOT FOR CLIENTS

I love shooting architecture and interiors photography. Ideally, my approach to shooting commercial interiors photography for clients starts with a tour of the space without the camera. I like to move around a commercial space and observe the lighting, whether natural light from the windows or artificial light sources. I try and notice how the space is used, how people move through it and what the everyday environment feels like, especially for those that use or work there.

As with most projects, as a Manchester freelance photographer, I try and create a sense of a narrative in my mind. How can I tell the story of this space with my imagery? It might be as simple as considering the order of the photographs and how they will be viewed. For example, if I'm photographing a space to help a client sell it on or to find a tenant, I will consider what a typical journey through the space will look like. Perhaps starting with the entrance, reception, stairway, corridors etc before showing the entrance to the actual area of focus.

Then once inside the space, I try and move through it in a logical and methodical way, to give the viewer as much of an authentic experience as possible.

I will look for angles that I feel show the space in its best possible light but also be sure to demonstrate how the zones inside the space connect to each other – giving an insight as to how people might use the space. Views that look out of one area into another can help to make a commercial interior space feel more open and welcoming, whilst also providing an opportunity to photograph specific details in the interior design.

As with all of my work, I will always try and celebrate natural light qualities. Strong light pouring through windows creates drama and yes, it does also mean contrasty images with shadows, but I try and embrace this. Representing the true and authentic feeling of being in this space. Of course I will also shoot more balanced shots of a commercial interior, bracketing exposures and compositing multiple shots so every corner is light and bright as this is a kind of industry standard. But there's no harm is offering options.

Empty commercial interiors are very different to shooting live office spaces that people might even be working in. When working in a live work or commercial environment there are obviously many more considerations. Firstly you need to be respectful of the fact that this is a place of work and people are trying to do their jobs. Secondly you can't always get the space as tidy as you might like. And this is where I also embrace the authenticity. I like my architectural interiors photography to look lived in. Incorporating people, movement, clutter and changing light can all work in your favour of helping breathe life into interior photography.

I really enjoy photographing architecture, buildings, locations, spaces and interiors. I thrive on the challenges that you face and finding workarounds on the fly. I love seeking out any architectural details or relics from a building's past. Anything that helps me build up a story in my head to accompany the imagery. I've worked on building sites shooting the demolition process, derelict warehouses acting as pigeon sanctuaries that have been earmarked for development right the way through to fully-completed premium residential development projects that are finished to the highest standard.

This is just a selection of my commercial property photography and commercial interiors photography work. Check out the other projects on my site to see examples of how I like to incorporate lifestyle photography into my property photography work.
