CAPTURING A SENSE OF PLACE
AROUND MANCHESTER'S NORTHERN QUARTER:

URBAN LIFESTYLE AND LOCAL AREA PHOTOGRAPHY

HOW DO PHOTOGRAPHERS CAPTURE A SENSE OF PLACE?

This is the question I consider when embarking on a project like this. You want placemaking photography like this to feature the local culture alongside social norms and behaviour - backed up with photography of the architecture, heritage, landmarks and amenities etc.

Manchester's vibrant Northern Quarter, renowned for its eclectic mix of independent businesses, trendy bars, and buzzing nightlife, is a microcosm of the city's dynamic spirit. I was commissioned by my client DS:Emotion – experts in branding, marketing, and placemaking projects, to capture the essence of this captivating neighbourhood and showcase its appeal to prospective tenants for a new development.

The project presented an exciting opportunity to delve into the heart of the city and explore the fascinating interplay of people, places, and architectural gems that define the Northern Quarter's unique character. I was tasked with creating a portfolio of location, architecture, and lifestyle photography that would effectively convey the vitality and diversity of everyday life in this dynamic district.

As a city life photographer I looked to capture the essence of the Northern Quarter and its emerging neighbours Ancoats and New Islington. I also wanted to capture the human element with candid urban lifestyle photography. These images infused the photography with a sense of authenticity and highlighted the social heart of the district.

The choice of lighting was crucial in bringing the Northern Quarter's character to life. I intentionally scheduled shoots later in the day to capture the golden hour, when the warm, diffused light cast a magical glow on the architecture and added depth and dimension to the images. This also coincided with the area's lively after-work atmosphere.

The final collection of images showcases the area's distinctive architecture and charm. Hopefully it successfully captures the essence of the neighbourhood, from its eclectic mix of independent businesses to its rich social life and unique architectural character. The project not only satisfied the client's objectives but also allowed me to explore the city's dynamic energy and capture its spirit through the lens of photography.

I'm keen to work with more clients in placemaking and property marketing. Especially those who prioritise sustainability in their practice and projects.
